Why Fad Diets Don’t Do It

Thumbnail[caption id="attachment_7359" align="alignright" width="234" caption="Photo taken from international.stockfood.com"][/caption] You’ve heard of it before—the “low-carb” and “high-protein” diet. While trying to lose weight, some people don’t eat carbohydrates at all. The reality is you need carbohydrates for energy, among other things. And it’s important to include the four food groups in your diet so that you get all the nutrients your body needs to function properly. Don’t cut out carbohydrates completely. Simple carbohydrates, like ice-cream and candy, are what you should avoid. They’ll give you a lot of energy, but it’s only short term, meaning, you’ll crash and burn quickly. Reduce whites in your diet and opt for whole grains, which can be found in cereals and breads. And especially if you’re going to work out, you’ll need high-energy foods, or complex carbohydrates, that will give you long-lasting energy, like bananas. Carbs.org says to eat “HIFWAC” fruits, which are high in fibre and water, like apples, strawberries, grapes and peaches, and to avoid “non-HIFWAC fruits,” including bananas, dried fruit and watermelon. You shouldn't limit yourself to a selected variety of fruits, however, as each one has its own benefits. Bananas, for example, have advantages that other fruits lack. According to ehow.com, they’re the only fresh fruits that are both alkaline and alkaline-forming, thereby, protecting the stomach from ulcers. Furthermore, whfoods.com, a website that promotes healthy eating through recipes and cooking videos, states that bananas also help build strong bones, as eating them on a regular basis will improve your body’s ability to absorb nutrients, including calcium. Bananas are excellent sources of vitamin B6 and potassium, an essential mineral that helps maintain blood pressure and heart function. If you’re working on building muscles, don’t just eat meat, otherwise, you won’t get sufficient fibre as your body gets deprived of vitamins and minerals that are found in other foods. Although high-protein diets might help you lose weight quickly, it doesn’t mean they’re healthy for you. According to nutraingredients.com, a website dedicated to health and nutrition, high-protein diets are often high in saturated fat and low in fruits and vegetables, causing dehydration, which can damage your kidneys. Foods other than meat that are high in protein include nuts, beans, legumes, tofu and fish. Almonds’ high fibre content will keep you feeling full for a long time. Exercising and portion control is what you want to aim for. If you’re feeling down and you know that chocolate muffin will brighten your spirits, eat it, without feeling guilty. Just remember to have everything in moderation, otherwise, you should feel guilty. In short, the key to maintain a healthy weight is to have a balanced diet and active lifestyle.Read More
